Leopard Geckos are one of the most popular reptiles kept as pets, largely due to their distinctive appearance and docile temperament. These small lizards are named for the leopard-like spots that adorn their bodies, although their coloration can vary widely depending on genetic factors. Originating from the rocky, dry grassland and desert regions of South Asia, including parts of India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, Leopard Geckos have evolved to thrive in harsh environments. They are nocturnal creatures, spending the day hidden under rocks or in burrows to escape the daytime heat and emerging at night to hunt. Unlike many other geckos, Leopard Geckos have eyelids, which is unusual for members of this family and helps them keep their eyes clean and free from debris in their dusty environment.

Leopard Geckos are ground-dwelling creatures known for their unique ability to shed their tail as a defense mechanism against predators—a process known as caudal autotomy. The tail, which is also used as a fat reserve, will eventually regrow, although it often does not match the original in size or color. This adaptability extends to their diet as well; they are opportunistic feeders, primarily consuming insects, but will occasionally eat smaller lizards or even their own shed skin to reclaim some of the nutrients. In captivity, they are relatively easy to care for, which makes them an excellent choice for novice reptile enthusiasts. They can live up to 20 years or more with proper care, displaying a variety of behaviors that endear them to their owners, such as their characteristic tail wiggle before attacking prey and their gentle handling nature.
